How You Will Read a Water Meter?

Assuming you would like tips on reading your water meter: Most water meters have a dial or digital readout that displays the amount of water you’ve used. Dials typically have four, five, or eight “dial faces.”

As water flows through the meter, the dials spin. Each digit on the face of the dial represents a different value—from 1 to 10 or 1 to 100—depending on which type of meter you have. The pointer on the end of each dial hand indicates how much water has flowed past that particular point in the system and is usually calibrated in gallons or cubic feet.

Water companies often use automated meter reading (AMR) devices to remotely read customers’ meters instead of having someone come out to manually read them every month, but if you want to know exactly how much water you’re using, it’s best to read your own meter regularly. To read your analog (dial) meter: Locate your dialmeter; they are typically found near where your main water line enters your home near an exterior wall.

If you can’t find it there, check other likely places such as by an outside spigot or in a basement utility room. Once you’ve located your meter, take note of any numbers along the bottom and right side; these help determine which digits on each “face” correspond with actual usage. For example, one common type has 4 numbered quadrants around each face with lines going from those quadrants towards the center; in this case, each digit between two lines counts as 10x whatever is noted next to that space (e.g., 10 gallons).

Other meters may have 5 equally spaced quadrants with numbers along just one side; in this case, each digit between two lines counts as 100x whatever is noted next to that space (e.g., 100 gallons). In either case, if there are no numbers along the bottom or right side then assume that each digit between two lines corresponds directly with usage (eql., 1 gallon). Once you know how many units each number/space represents look at all 3 faces and identify which is currently spinning/moving – this will be your “active” face.

Starting from leftmost moving part on active face – count #of spaces clockwise until pointer meets stationary line – this # multiplied by units indicated for given face = total usage since last reading!
