Case of Water

Water is an essential element for all life on Earth. It makes up approximately 60% of the human body and 70% of the surface of the planet. Despite its abundance, water is a limited resource.

Only 3% of the world’s water is freshwater, and two-thirds of that is locked in ice caps and glaciers. The remaining one percent is found in lakes, rivers, groundwater, and atmospheric water vapor. A new study has found that increasing temperatures due to climate change will result in less water being available for plants, animals, and humans in the future.

The research was conducted by scientists at McGill University in Canada and published in the journal Nature Climate Change. The team used a computer model to simulate how different levels of warming would affect global water availability. They found that under a high emissions scenario, where greenhouse gas levels continue to rise unchecked, global water availability could decline by as much as 20% by 2050 compared to 2010 levels.

Even under a low emissions scenario, where emissions are reduced significantly, water availability would still decline by 5%. Lead author Brendan Byrne said that the findings highlight the need for better management of our scarce freshwater resources. He added that “as we face up to increasing pressures on our limited supplies of fresh water – from population growth, urbanization and climate change – it’s becoming increasingly important that we use this precious resource more efficiently.
